International Green Motor Events (IGME) managing director Giles Brown told Event the decision was nothing to do with Battersea Power Station’s owners Real Estate Opportunities going into administration, and had already been made before the news broke.
"At the time our concern was about the £5bn development plans. We didn’t know when works were going to start and how much space would be available," he said.
The show, which launched in September last year, will take place at the earlier date of 10-13 May to avoid being overshadowed by the Olympics and will continue its partnership with free newspaper Metro.
Brown said the move will enable IGME to take the event to the next level and increase the test driving opportunities which were at full capacity at last year’s show.
"Excel is an outstanding venue, and with nearly 500,000 attending the British Motor Show in 2008, we know how popular it was with both the industry and general public," he added.
The inaugural show was expected to attract between 20,000 and 30,000 visitors, but actual attendance only reached a third of that figure. Brown admitted it had been difficult to predict numbers: "It was a launch event and we had no precedent to guess what the numbers might be, and simply guessed too high," he said at the time.
