It's his fifteenth solo LP – his 1st for nearly 5 years – and includes twelve cowl versions of songs he grew up paying attention to in Liverpool, like Bye Bye Blackbird and It's solely a Paper Moon, that maybe his father would play on the piano.

The album's title, Kisses on rock bottom, comes from lead track i am Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter, originally successful for Fats Waller in 1935.
